PANDAS Epidemic: More than 1/200 Children Affected

More than 1 in 200 kids develops PANDAS symptoms post-Streptococcal infection and the stats are even higher for other children within a family that already has a PANDAS/PANS child.

Parents and physicians who don’t know the telltale symptoms may not realize that the recent Strep infection is responsible for triggering neuropsychiatric symptoms such as OCD, ODD, emotional liability, extreme anxiety, and tic disorders. In any child with a new onset of these symptoms, Strep infection should be investigated and a trial of antibiotic treatment is warranted even in those with negative ASO Titres.

Early intervention is so important to quickly treat the infection and halt the progression of inflammation in the brain. PANDAS is an autoimmune encephalitis triggered by a bacterial infection, and delaying treatment means a longer road to recovery and years lost of that child’s life.
