Estrogen Dominance + PMS
About
Estrogen Dominance describes a state of hormonal imbalance where estrogen levels in your body become elevated or out of balance—with respect to your progesterone and other hormone levels. Estrogen levels may become elevated as a result of poor estrogen metabolism by your liver and the intake of exogenous estrogens.
Symptoms
Symptoms of estrogen dominance are often considered “normal” and not attributed to a hormonal imbalance or increased risk for chronic disease.
Some symptoms of estrogen dominance may include:
- Premenstrual syndrome (PMS): Diffuse breast tenderness, bloating, low back pain, cramps, irritability and low mood prior to the start of your period
- Dysmenorrhea (painful periods/period cramps)
- Menorrhagia (heavy periods)
- Metrorrhagia (irregular cycles)
- Ovarian cysts
- Endometriosis
- Infertility
- Uterine fibroids
- Fibrocystic breast tissue
- Abnormal cells on Pap test / Cervical dysplasia
- Female cancers (breast, cervical, ovarian, uterine)
